Ruth Hamilton was born in Alta, Iowa. She graduated from teacher's college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1916 and began teaching in a country schoolhouse in Iowa the same year. In 1921 she married Carter Hamilton, a professional baseball player for the Cleveland Indians. She returned to school to study dramatics and English at the University of Minnesota and continued to take courses throughout her life.
